Sylvia Guinan

Today we are diving into how Sylvia Guinan found her purpose in life, nailed her niche and creates meaningful change in the world.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
You originally thought you wanted to be an attorney, a psychologist or work in marketing – until a career coach elevated you and said you were destined to be a financial advisor. Tell us more about how this came about?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
After completing a comprehensive questionnaire and many sessions with my career coach, the results indicated that my best career fit was being a financial advisor. I was still not convinced and continued to explore other options.  My financial advisor at the time invited me to a career opportunity event that Smith Barney was hosting in NYC for new prospective financial advisor trainees.  After listening to the speakers, I was intrigued and excited by what they said and I applied for the position as financial advisor trainee the next day.

As soon as completed my training and I started working as a financial advisor, I knew I had connected with my passion.  I am very appreciative that I have a career I am fulfilled with and I am passionate about helping my clients obtain their personal and financial goals.  In retrospect, I was able to fulfill many original interests that I had when I was exploring the legal and psychology fields.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
What are the main struggles you see when clients come to you?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
When a new client that is going through a major life transition comes to see me, the greater struggle is supporting them and helping them progress from despair to hope on the emotional side.

On the financial side, the challenge is bringing them clarity around the huge change they are embarking on and instilling confidence that they will be okay and illustrating it in their financial plan.  It’s also important to tell them that their current situation does not have to be a sad ending and empowering them to focus on the potential for a new wonderful beginning.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
Sylvia, did you always know you wanted to work for yourself?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
I work for Wells Fargo Advisors—but manage my own advisory practice.  I appreciate having the breadth of resources and experts through the company at my fingertips yet I always liked being accountable for my own growth and success.  It’s the best of all worlds, really!

What resonates most is that the only person I can blame or thank when I look in the mirror is the person I see in the mirror:  me.

“I can’t be all things to everyone—but I can be quite a few things for a select few” – Sylvia Guinan

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
I love this statement, for the readers who are thinking “I want to serve everyone” tell us why it’s important to focus on a niche.

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
By focusing on a niche, you can truly become a specialist and bring value from an emotional and financial perspective to your clients.  It is similar to the medical profession in that you wouldn’t visit your general physician if you were having heart issues, you would go to a heart specialist.

“It’s much more than managing money” – Sylvia Guinan

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
You have a very meaningful connection with your clients, which I think is beautiful, and having this deep passion for something is a must for success. How did you uncover your passion in life?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
Since I was a little girl, I always had a positive perspective on life.  It wasn’t in my nature to look at situations and say, “Why is this happening “to” me?” but rather, “Why is this happening “for” me?”  I’ve always had the ability to find the pearl in any situation.  I loved lifting people up when they were down—and still do.

However, I didn’t what to do with this gift when I was younger.  I now feel so fortunate that I’ve found my passion and I can use my natural gift to help my clients through their life transitions.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
How do you take your clients from where they are to where they wish to be?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
I help my clients honor their past and not label their particular life transition as good or bad but rather put their focus on where they would like their new lives to be heading.  I create customized financial plans to show them how we can support their goals and dreams.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
Your clients came to your home for Easter brunch this year, which is lovely, being a single mother of 3, how do you manage to fit everything in and keep going? (do you keep to a schedule/practice meditation)

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
Having the deep connections such as I have with my clients, along with raising three teenagers, requires my cup to be full, so to speak.  Because I give my all both emotionally and mentally, I can become drained if I do not take care of myself.  Through experience, I’ve learned to fill my cup in the morning, starting at 5:30 a.m., when little can get it the way.  Depending on the day and what I need to accomplish, I either go for a run on the beach, attend a yoga or Pilates class or simply read and meditate.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
If you had to start over again, is there anything you would have done differently along the way?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
Yes, I wouldn’t have tried so hard to be all things to all people as it was exhausting. I’ve also learned that that behavior caused me to not be authentic.  I’ve discovered along the way that by being authentic and connecting with like-minded clients, I am able to bring the best version of ‘me’ to the advisor-client relationship.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
Have you had any knockbacks or setbacks throughout your journey?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
Like most people, I’ve had my share of setbacks along the way—typically, when I was trying to be someone that I am not.  A primary example of this was when I was trying to connect with clients that were not like-minded.  I’m much more stringent about which people I accept as clients these days and it’s a win-win for both me and my clients.

SARAH JANE NYMAN Q:
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

SYLVIA GUINAN A:
My first manager in NYC advised me to surround myself with positive people and healthy environments, whenever possible.  He said that is where I would build my best practice and it would flow naturally— and he was spot-on!  At this point in my life, I try to pay it forward.

For example, I recently hosted a group meeting for six female clients with the discussion topic being, “Releasing What No Longer Serves You.”  I intentionally invite clients at various stages of transition in their lives and it’s amazing how candid they are about sharing their stories and inspiring one another.

It’s a private setting in which we talk about life and drink tea and we close the meeting with some sort of craft, such as mixing essential oils or creating vision boards or writing positive messages on rocks.
