When you’re running a business, social media is more than simply scrolling to entertain yourself. You’re no longer consuming content – you’re creating it. Which means you have two dominant roles: content creator and data analyst.

That means when you create your content you are consistently looking at the engagements to analyze and evaluate what is (and isn’t) working for your account.

But, how exactly do you do that? How do you use that data to grow your social media?

Easy, keep reading below and you’ll find out…

Step 1: Create A Foundation

You have to start from somewhere, right? Take a good look at your current analytics and see how you can build from there. Take some time out (and pull out a calculator) to go through all of your stats on all of your social networks. Look for your average:

  • Daily views
  • Likes/Comments
  • Reach
  • Engagements
  • Story views

This is how you are going to find your key performance indicators (KPI) which is  exactly the information you need to move the needle in your social media account's growth.

Step 2: Use A Data Analytics Software

Trust us, compiling all of your social network’s analytics into one easy-to-read document can be super challenging. Which is why leaving this tricky task to a software program is probably your best bet. Building a dashboard with your analytics will make it easy to compare the performance of your content across multiple channels.

Programs like Cyfe or Buffer Analyze are great at tracking data throughout a period of time to understand what’s growing or slowing down your accounts. This is also going to help you identify your top channels and which platform is resonating the best with your audience and content.

Step 3: Trial and Error

The only way to find out what works best for your business on social media is to literally start posting. Hop on the latest trends, try posting at different times, see how Reels do on your profile, test out content that allows your audience to learn from your account and try visually pleasing content. Literally, try any and everything – because this is the only way to figure out what works best for your account.

Also, be mindful that different content resonates differently on different platforms. For instance, your Pinterest audience is looking to learn something, while your Instagram audience gives you less than 3 seconds of their time to impress them. Learn your platform’s audience and create the content they want to see.

Step 4: Set Measurable Goals

Based on the foundation you’re working off of, use this data to set measurable goals that are feasible for you to hit. Whether you’re trying to hit a certain number of page views, content engagement, conversions, or follower growth. Remember to use the SMART method when creating these goals:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-based

Throughout your journey of tracking your analytics feel free to adjust your goals as you see fit. Remember, while the goal is to grow your social media it’s also important to understand what your audience wants from your content. Learn through these processes and you will absolutely start to see results.
