Meet Emily! Conscious Boss founder, TedX speaker, incredible business strategist and self-confessed collaboration junkie. Focused on wellness, living consciously and enacting self-celebration, Emily is a powerhouse of positivity and good vibes.
We recently caught up about her journey and how she’s spreading her message in 2019.
All I can say is… if you’re looking for a monumentally quotable #girlboss, she’s right here!
Hi Emily, thank you so much for joining me today. Firstly, let’s start with a little bit of background – who you are, where you come from and how you found yourself where you are today…
My brother was a coach and he was the first person to introduce me to coaching. I always knew I wanted a business and had studied International Business and Economics at university – but I did the whole corporate thing, living in Sydney and thinking that my dream was to be a CEO of a multi-national corporation.
After my Dad sadly passed away, I knew I wanted to do something for myself. I moved back home to New Zealand and got into network marketing – it was a combination of business and health, which married together two things that a really cared about. I knew I wanted my own business and network marketing gave me my first experience of it.
Inside there was a little niggle that said ‘this isn’t it…’
That’s when I started speaking, MC-ing at events, building communities and coaching clients. In 2014 I went to an event that changed my life (Spirit Junkie Masterclass with Gabby Bernstein) – I decided I was done with waiting for my life to start or waiting until I was ‘ready’… I came home and launched Conscious Boss.
I will not let fear be the primary guide of my life.
What are you working on right now? How are you spending your days?
This year is super transitional for me and I’m in a very exploratory stage. I’m attending more events and having meetings with people to explore new things – we should always stay curious and keep that inquisitive nature.
Generally, my day involves client calls, group calls, working on projects and podcasts. Mostly I’m collaborating, co-working and meeting with great people. Every day is a little different.
Conscious Boss is such an incredible brand name – what does conscious mean to you now?
When I started Conscious Boss I actually had no idea that I’d be working with conscious businesses and individuals – but it’s really grown into its own. Conscious Boss is really multi-faceted. For example, it might be about someone who has a business and is really passionate about acting with integrity, or businesses working with sustainability and really making a change in the world. But also, it could be someone who is truly committed to personal growth, taking care of themselves and their relationships. A Conscious Boss lives in alignment with what they want.
I truly believe that business is the powerful force we need in order to instigate the change we need in the world right now.
I used to think that everyone and anyone should be an entrepreneur. There’s this dangerous thing happening in society where we are really glamorising being an entrepreneur – there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a job. People feel like they should be an entrepreneur, but that’s not ever the right reason to do something.
Happiness is the key to everything and there’s no good, right, bad or wrong.
You’re so confident in spreading your message – for women who are breaking into the world of business or coaching, how can they be more confident?
So, this was totally me – I was waiting for everything I wanted, before I took the action. The reality is, the things that we want only comes from action. How can you be confident in something you don’t know how to do?
I still get nervous every time I have to speak on stage. In fact, I was a nervous wreck before my Ted talk. You can project and think that someone has so much confidence, but actually their driver is just greater than their fear. You have to want the result more than you’re willing to let the fear stop you.
You only get confident at it, by doing the thing. It’s not fearlessness we, but courage!
Surround yourself with an amazing community that inspire you, but also support you. I have invested so much money in coaching, communities and voice coaches to enable myself to be in the space of cultivating that skill. Face off with failure, we’ve all been there and done the awkward horrible thing.
We’ve seen you talk about self-celebration – what do you do to celebrate your awesome successes?
Essentially, if you don’t stop and celebrate you’re basically saying EFF YOU to your life. You just end up stuck in the hamster wheel of burnout, not allowing yourself to experience what you’ve created.
I burnt out last year and I’ve now made this mental switch that my life isn’t about my business, my business is a part of my life. Joy, play, creation and fun are all my main priorities. I just feel like life is meant to be enjoyed, it’s the whole point! If you’re not having fun, something in your life is out of whack. It can be anything – giving yourself the afternoon off to take a nap, have a bath, lie in the sun.
Make the decision that celebration is a core piece of every single day – because that piece is actually a business building activity.
For example, you’re exhausted but you still have to write an article. So you push through and don’t rest, you write the article and it’s terrible. That’s all pointless. Burnout is not an option anymore because you are the business.
What books/podcasts/accounts are inspiring you right now?
I love body positive podcasts and anti-dieting stuff. Like FoodPsych Podcast by Christy Harrison
If you could sum up yourself/your journey in a quote, what would it be?
“We must walk consciously only part way towards our goal, and then leap in the darkness to our success.”Henry David Thoreau
